It’s not only environmentalists who are worried about the water level in Hungary’s Lake Velence. Business owners in the tourism sector are struggling with the consequences.
According to locals, many tourists have been put off by reports about Lake Velence drying up.
Experts warn that the lake’s future depends on a combination of climate change, water management and human intervention.
Hungary’s Environment Ministry, says that the situation could improve as early as next year if the government’s attempts to reduce water demand and increase water reserves in the region bear fruit.
For now, however, the worry is that the current extreme heat could cause water levels to drop even further.
