In one of Delhi’s most densely populated neighborhoods, a simple idea is helping families improve their diets despite rising food prices and growing economic pressures.
In Nizamuddin Basti, residents are transforming concrete rooftops into small vegetable gardens — growing spinach, amaranth, eggplant, tomatoes and other crops in recycled crates and containers. The initiative, called Gardens of Hope, was launched to address malnutrition and make fresh produce more accessible for low-income households.
As heat waves become more frequent and many families struggle with shrinking budgets, these rooftop gardens are providing a low-cost source of nutritious food. The project has also expanded into local schools, teaching children about gardening, composting and sustainability.
What started with just a handful of families has grown into a community movement, showing how even limited urban spaces can help strengthen food security and create greener cities.
